The Hippocampus was popularly used in mosaics as decorations for public baths and other places where water is in use. This is because they are often used to represent Posiedon's power and control over water. There is an elaborate bronze sculpture of hippocampi in the temple of Posiedon at Corinth from the second century CE. The Hippocampus was always depicted in ancient Roman times but it has also been used in artwork and statues in modern times as well. The Trevi fountain, shown to the right, was built in the 18th century, much more recent than most of the older paintins and drawings on ancient vases and pottery.

    Who is Triton?
Triton can refer to any mermaid-like sea creature, but he was actually a Greek mythological creature. He was the messenger of the seas. His parents were Poseidon and Amphitrite, god and goddess of the sea. According to a poem written by Hesiod, Triton lived in a golden palace under the water.
    What does he look like?
Triton is half-man, half-fish. His lower body is similar to a fish’s tail, but his upper body is like a human’s. In Ovid’s The Iliad, Triton has shells on his shoulders. Like Poseidon, he carried a Trident which is a staff with three prongs on the end of it. However, if you see a picture of Triton, you will most likely see him holding a twisted seashell. By blowing into it, he could calm or disrupt the water. Usually he did this when his father told him to. Some say that the sound would cause giants to flee because they thought it was a wild monster.
